Grammar Checker
I've been reading a lot just for the sake of observing grammar, Especially the English grammar. Books can be very helpful but I'd rather read blog posts, notes, editorial and some other interesting articles on the net made by those people who share their random thoughts.
I'm not the kind of a person who gets irritated if I see somebody uses incorrect grammar or constructs horrible simple sentences, though. As a matter of fact, It's nice to know that several Filipinos or even Americans themselves are trying to make their grammar more desirable. I myself also commit mistakes when I make such blog posts and notes but I want the readers to know that I would not mind if you guys will correct my grammar or some misused words. You are free to do it and I'd be thankful.
Whenever I am being corrected, I know that I can improve myself the next time. If I see some errors as I read others' posts, they become my guide when I make my posts. They help me to become more watchful when I write/type my articles.
Here are some of my guidelines, hope these can somehow be informative. Always remember that the way we talk tends to be a lot less formal than the way we write. In writing, we have to remember the correct grammar because when we translate our spoken ideas into writing, trust me, sometimes, you'll get confused.
When I was in my first grade, I tried to compose a short poem. I got a few errors when my grandmother checked it but she said, "The poem is impressive". One of the mistakes I made is
when I added "S" to the word ADVICE.
My granny told me that the word ADVICE does not have a plural form. I have been keeping that in my mind until now.
I asked her, "What about the word ADVISE?, what does that mean?". She answered me,"You do know what the word ADVICE means right?". And I said yes.
Then she simply said, "ADVISE is the word which gives an ADVICE".
I got what she said. She meant that the word ADVISE is a verb and those two words cannot be interchanged.
And oh, I can still remember how confused I was when I couldn't make up my mind if I would use ESPECIALLY OR SPECIALLY ?
Now here it is, ESPECIALLY means EXCEPTIONALLY OR PARTICULARLY in a noteworthy manner. while SPECIALLY means PARTICULARLY in a distinguishing manner. I suggest to use 'ESPECIALLY' if you want to emphasize a noteworthy quality.
waah. I almost forgot to include the use of Prepositions IN,ON,AT. To be honest, I still get confused sometimes in using these stupid prepositions.HAHA. I only think of some simple guidelines when using the irritating IN,ON,AT.
The Preposition 'IN': For spaces
IN a department store, IN a room, IN a park,
For bodies of water:
IN the river,IN the sea,IN the water
For lines:
IN a queue,IN a row
The Preposition 'ON': For suffaces
ON the floor,ON the table
For direction:
ON the left,ON the right, straight ON
The Preposition 'AT': For places
AT the door,AT the cinema
For groups of people:
AT the back of the class
